Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear tissue covering the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, allergies, or irritants. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious, while allergic and irritant conjunctivitis are not.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include redness, itching, a gritty sensation, excessive tearing, and discharge.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include applying warm compresses, using lubricating eye drops, avoiding irritants, and, in some cases, using prescribed medications.
